Emily and Ellie are challenging themselves to #SwimForDementia to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society.

While the pandemic has been difficult for us all, we can only imagine how devastating it has been for those affected by dementia. We are forever grateful for those who work tirelessly to support those affected prior to and during the pandemic. To support Emily and Ellie over the next 30 days will be sharing their progress to raise awareness and support.

“I’m doing this in memory of my nan who passed away in 2016 with Alzheimer’s. I’m not the strongest swimmer but I want to raise money for the Alzheimer’s society in the hope that one day there will be a cure for dementia.”

“I am nervous, excited and honoured to be taking part in this challenge. To not only raise awareness of dementia and funds for the Alzheimer’s society, but also to dedicate hours each week for reflection and appreciation while I swim”

What is dementia?

Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer. Someone develops it every three minutes and there’s currently no cure.

  • Dementia is a syndrome in which there is deterioration in cognitive function beyond what might be expected from the usual consequences of biological ageing.
  • Although dementia mainly affects older people, it is not an inevitable consequence of ageing.
  • Currently, more than 55 million people live with dementia worldwide, and there are nearly 10 million new cases every year.
  • Dementia results from a variety of diseases and injuries that primarily or secondarily affect the brain. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia and may contribute to 60-70% of cases.
  • Dementia is currently the seventh leading cause of death among all diseases and one of the major causes of disability and dependency among older people globally.
  • Dementia has physical, psychological, social and economic impacts, not only for people living with dementia, but also for their carers, families and society at large.

Haelu’s support

As a company that builds software solutions to support health and social care, we spend a lot of our time engaging with those who are on the front line, caring for and supporting those with long-term conditions like dementia. While family, friends, and care providers do all they can, it's organisations like the Alzheimer's society that are researching into care and cure, providing support and training, and campaigning for the rights of people living with dementia.

We are extremely proud of Emily and Ellie for taking on this challenge and will be supporting them as best we can over the next 30 days.
